Frequently asked questions.

Where do i start?

Simply come along to one of our soft kit training sessions. It’s the best way to meet the team and dip your toe into the sport

How old do I have to be?

At the moment due to our venues insurance policy we require participants to be at least 16 years old. Anyone over the age of 16 can take part in our soft kit training and represent the club at soft kit tournaments. Junior members who meet the required skill set are encourage to take part in armoured training however most UK competitions require armoured fighters to be at least 18 years old.

Is it dangerous?

No. Like all other contact sport injuries do occur but these are no worse than Karate/Kickboxing/Tae kwon-do or other similar martial arts. Soft kit sparing in particular is safe with padded equipment that allows for sparing without injury.

Only at the highest level of fully armoured fighting would we expect to see any significant injuries and again this is no different to contact sports such as rugby.

Is it expensive?

Initial costs to get involved are quite low, no more than purchasing training outfits such as a Judo Gi or kickboxing pads. Soft Kit equipment is provided by the club although we do suggest that as people become more involved they invest in a good head guard, gloves and accompaniments as these are more comfortable if bought in tailored sizes.

Armour is where cost can rise dramatically. Entry level armour and second hand equipment is readily available. People often upgrade their kit as they become more involved meaning there can be a glut of second hand kit available. Obviously if you want your own custom built and designed harness with spring steel and titanium then costs can be astronomical.

Most people begin by borrowing kit from similar sized fighters and purchasing second hand. For a complete set of competition ready armour anything from £1000-£2000. This does not need to be bought in one go. Most people buy individual sections of the armour at a time over the course of a few years.

Is it worth it?

Yes! This sport will provide you with unique experiences and forge friendships for a life time. I am yet to meet someone within the sport that hasn’t completely fallen in love with it.
